RCV2 Troubleshooting: Weak Welds, Strap Not Tensioning, Battery and Display Problems

Most RCV2 calls we take come down to five things, and four of them are fixed without tools. Work through this list before you send anything back — and if you are still stuck, call or email us; we repair these in Whittier and have seen it all.

Before anything else: the RCV2 manual (PDF) has the loading and settings diagrams this article refers to.

1. The weld is weak, or the strap pulls apart

Symptom: the joint peels open by hand, or the weld area looks small.

Causes, in order of likelihood:

  • Weld time too short. Press F twice until the weld-time icon flashes and use + to lengthen it. Range is 1.0–5.0 s; thicker PET strap needs the longer end.
  • Weld time too long. Melted strap squeezes out of the joint and the weld gets thin. Back the time down one step at a time.
  • Dirty strap. Oil, grease or dust on the strap surface stops it welding. The manual is blunt about this: dirty straps cannot be welded. Keep coils off the floor — see how to store strap.
  • Low battery. If the weld fails and the battery icon is flashing, remove the strap, swap or charge the battery, and start over. A weak weld on a low battery is not a tool fault.
  • Cold shop. The tool works from 41°F, but welds best at 59–68°F. Below that, add weld time.

Rule of thumb: a good weld should hold about 75% of the strap's break strength. If you can peel it, it is not shipping.

2. The strap slips or the tool does not tension

Symptom: the motor runs but the strap does not tighten, or it slips back.

  • Straps not loaded parallel. Both layers must lie flat on top of each other in the tool with no twist. Lift the handle, reload, release.
  • Tension level too low for the load. Press F once (tension icon flashes) and step up with +. Levels 1–10 cover roughly 450–4,500 N. Cartons want the low end; pallets and lumber the high end.
  • Worn tension wheel. The grip wheel is a wear part. If the teeth look polished or the strap has stopped biting on a clean, dry strap, fit a new one — RCV2 tension wheel, pack of 2.
  • Strap too thin or too wide. The RCV2 takes 1/4"–3/4" strap, 0.016"–0.047" thick. Very light PP outside that range will slip.

3. The tool stops in the middle of a cycle

  • Screen went dark during tensioning or welding: the battery is fully discharged. Every function stops. Charge it (about 90 minutes) and reload the strap.
  • You pressed the tension button again after it stopped: don't. The tool stops automatically when it reaches the set tension; release the button and go straight to the weld handle.
  • Tool overheating: continuous use above 113°F ambient is outside spec. Let it rest in the shade.

4. Battery problems

  • New tool, no power. Batteries ship uncharged for safety. Charge fully before first use.
  • Battery icon flashing. Remove and recharge. Do not keep strapping on a flashing icon; welds get unreliable first.
  • Runtime has dropped. A healthy battery does about 350 straps per charge and 2,000+ cycles. If it is well under that after two or three years, replace it — 14.4V 4,000 mAh replacement. Our battery care article covers how to make one last.
  • Battery will not seat. Remove the rear cover in the arrow direction, press the black release button and slide the battery in until it clicks.

5. LCD screen problems

  • Cracked or unreadable display, tool otherwise works: the screen module is replaceable in about 15 minutes — step-by-step guide with video.
  • Display blank but battery charged: reseat the battery; if still blank, the ribbon cable inside may have come loose — same guide, steps 2 and 4.

Strap breaks during tensioning

Usually not the tool. Check for a sharp package corner under the strap, tension set too high for light PP, or old strap that has been in the sun. Stand beside the strap line, never in line with it, while tensioning.

When to stop and call us

Cracks in the housing, a motor that hums but does not turn, or a burnt smell: stop using the tool and contact support. Machines under the 1-year warranty are repaired or replaced; out of warranty we quote parts and labor. Wear parts — batteries, tension wheels, and more — are stocked in California.
